Lose weight on keto

The ketogenic diet has gone viral, reviving the spirit of the Atkins diet. Both diets seek to replace carbs in the typical American diet with healthier fats.

Clinical research testifies to the potential benefits, including healthier blood sugar levels, a reduced appetite between meals, mental clarity and energy, and of course, weight loss. This is achieved by switching the fuel your body burns for energy from glucose (sugar) to ketones (from fat).

It works when you follow a high-fat, low-carb, moderate protein diet to promote ketosis (burn ketones for energy).

The essential keto doctrine is to eat less than 50 grams of carbs a day. Then, eat a diet based on a calorie ratio of about 70% fat, 20% protein and less than 10% carbs. For a 2,000 calorie diet, that equates to 155g of fat, 100g of protein and less than 50g of carbs.

The latest trend is to use special ingredients to help you get into ketosis easier and stay there. Here are some of our favorites:

Fat

Consuming enough fat is at the core of a ketogenic diet. Certain products make this easier like ghee (clarified butter), butter, MCTs and coconut oil.

We also like flaxseed oil because it has omega-3s. Fat helps keep you full, making it easier to stay on the diet.

Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs)

Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are a type of fat. They are easily metabolized to form ketones, and are categorized by numbers. The most popular are lauric acid (C12), capric acid (C10) and caprylic acid (C8)Coconut oil is a great source of all three.

Each MCT has different strengths, but research has shown C8 (caprylic acid) boosts blood ketones the best, followed by a combination of C10 and C8.

Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB)

Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is used by the body as an important ketone. When you consume BHB as an ingredient, it directly boosts the ketone levels in your body. One study showed that the combination of MCTs and BHBs boosted blood ketone levels higher than either could alone.

Electrolytes

Electrolytes are very important during a keto diet, especially in the beginning stage when many people get dehydrated. Multi-vitamin formulas are also important because a lower intake of fruit also means less vitamins and antioxidants in your diet.

Protein powders and bars

Protein powders and low net-carb bars can help you keep your carb intake low but still ensure you are getting your 100g of protein a day.

Fiber

Fiber products like psyllium husks are important because you’ll be avoiding breads, grains and many other fiber-containing foods.
