Gymnema sylvestre 

Gymnema sylvestre is a woody climbing plant that grows in the tropical forests of central and southern India. The leaves are used in herbal medicine preparations. The leaves, when chewed, interfere with the ability to taste sweetness, which explains the Hindi name gurmar—“destroyer of sugar.”

Cinnamon

Most people know Cinnamon as the sweet (but pungent) tasting spice, but clinical studies of cinnamon have shown positive effects on glucose metabolism. Many people use cinnamon to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels.*

In one study, 116 people with metabolic syndrome took 1,000 mg of cinnamon capsules three times per day with meals or placebo pills. After 16 weeks, while the placebo group had not improved, those taking cinnamon had lost an average of 7.7 pounds of body weight, 2.2 inches in waist circumference, 1.5 percent of body fat, and lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 13.6 and 8.1 mmHg, respectively.

Compared to placebo, fasting blood sugar levels were lower by 5.4 mg per deciliter of blood (mg/dL), total cholesterol by 16.24 mg/dL, and triglycerides by 17.7 mg/dL. HDL, the “good” cholesterol, increased by 1.9 mg/dL. Overall, 34.5 percent of those in the cinnamon group were no longer classified as having metabolic syndrome compared to 5.4 percent for placebo.

 

Chromium

Chromium may improve insulin function and help you manage your weight.* Chromium is a trace mineral and the most important nutrient for optimal utilization of insulin. Alpha lipoic acid helps support normal blood sugar levels already within the normal range.*

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) improves the body’s ability to absorb and convert sugar (glucose) to energy (glycemic control-insulin sensitivity), according to a study. Scientists found that the patients were able to clear glucose from the blood nearly twice as quickly—an average 85.8% increase in clearing rate—as before taking ALA. The scientists were able to conclude that short-term oral ALA treatment increases insulin sensitivity.

In another study, 360 obese people took 1,200 mg or 1,800 mg of ALA per day or a placebo, along with eating a low-calorie diet. After 20 weeks, compared to placebo, many more of those in the 1,800 mg ALA group had lost at least 5 percent of their body weight. Overall, the 1,800 mg ALA group lost an average of 2.1 percent of body weight and had lower body-mass index (BMI) scores.

 

Biotin

Biotin is a B-vitamin used throughout the body as an essential cofactor for many important enzymes. Biotin is important for amino acid and fatty acid metabolism.*

According to one study, people who took the B-vitamin biotin and the essential trace mineral chromium picolinate had better blood sugar control and reduced blood fats. Participants took 2 mg of biotin plus 600 mcg of chromium picolinate per day or a placebo for four weeks. Researchers tested blood sugar control at the start and end of the study and found that those who had taken biotin and chromium picolinate had an average 9.7% decrease in blood sugar levels compared to the start of the study, while blood sugar levels in the placebo group increased an average of 5.1%.

Blood fats (triglycerides) decreased by 9.25 mg per deciliter of blood (mg/dL) in the biotin/chromium picolinate group while increasing 59.75 mg/dL in the placebo group. Participants reported no significant side effects. Doctors concluded that taking biotin combined with chromium picolinate may be an effective complementary therapy that may also help lower blood-fat levels.
