Buyer's Guide: The best testosterone products

Testosterone is what keeps a man strong, muscular, youthful and vibrant. However, testosterone levels decrease as men age. Here are a few of our favorite products for supporting the body’s natural production of testosterone.

Tribulus Terrestris

Research shows this natural plant extract can increase luteinizing hormone by as much as 70% and thereby elevate testosterone production. The normal dosage is 200-750 mg per day using a form of Tribulus standardized for at least 40% saponins. Excellent products include Allmax TribX90 and Fitness Labs Tribulus Ultra

DHEA

DHEA is a natural hormone precursor to testosterone. As you age, your body produces less and less DHEA. Supplemental DHEA can often help support testosterone in the normal range. A typical dosage for men is 25-50 mg per day. Try Lindberg DHEA 50 mg.

ZMA combines special forms of zinc and magnesium aspartate with vitamin B-6. Two studies show it can raise total and free testosterone up to 33% in athletes. Many bodybuilders feel that ZMA improves recovery from strenuous training sessions. ZMA is usually taken at bedtime and many users report that it helps them sleep better. D-Aspartic Acid

Italian researchers examined the effect of D-aspartic acid (DAA), a non-essential amino acid, which plays a role in energy metabolism and testosterone levels in middle-aged men. The men supplemented with 3.12 grams/day of DAA for 12 days and showed a gradual increase in testosterone of 16% after 6 days and 42% at 12 days. Most showed an increase in testosterone and levels were still elevated after 3 days of DAA cessation.

The researchers also measured luteinizing hormone (LH), a potent stimulator of testosterone secretion in males. It was shown that DAA accumulated in the testes as well as the anterior pituitary in the brain where LH is produced. This plays a role in the stimulatory effect of DAA on hormone production. Vitamin D3

A vitamin D deficiency is present in over 40% of the population, and a vitamin D insufficiency is present in about 3/4 of the population. New studies are being conducted in a broad range of functions, especially in its role in maintaining healthy testosterone levels. Studies have shown that higher vitamin D levels are associated with higher levels of free T and total T levels.* Read about the study here

Vitamin D also helps the heart. In another review of long-term heart studies, doctors discovered that for every 10 nanograms per milliliter of blood increase in vitamin D, chances for fatal and non-fatal heart events decreased by 10 to 12 percent. Read the research study here

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb used as an aphrodisiac in India and has been shown to be helpful for male fertility and improved sperm counts. The study showed that men taking ashwagandha had a much higher percentage of sperm counts and an increase in sperm motility; the ability of sperm to move forward.

Testosterone levels in the men taking ashwagandha also increased. Doctors said the findings suggest ashwagandha root extract safely and effectively treated male infertility. Read the research study here

DIM & Chrysin

Men have estrogen too (not just women), and the more your body has can actually decrease your testosterone levels. Research shows higher levels of testosterone and low levels of estrogen have been linked to lean muscle mass, an efficient fat-burning metabolism, and low abdominal fat.*

DIM is a phytonutrient found in cruciferous vegetables including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and kale. Diindolylmethane has unique benefits that support the activity of enzymes that improve estrogen metabolism.*

Research shows diindolylmethane increases the level of "favorable" estrogens (2-hydroxyestrogen) while reducing the levels of "less favorable" estrogens (16-hydroxyestrogen).* Diindolylmethane (DIM) converts strong and damaging forms of estrogen into weaker forms so your testosterone is protected and your balance of testosterone to estrogen ratio is in check.*
