Buyer's Guide: The best prostate nutrients

Tired of losing sleep by having to use the bathroom during the night? As men age, the prostate may enlarge causing a variety of issues. See your doctor regularly and consider some of these highly effective ingredients found in many prostate formulas.

Beta-sitosterol is a plant sterol that appears to play a unique role in supporting prostate health, especially supporting normal urine flow. Effective doses are around 100 mg a day. Typically you’ll see results after about a month of regular use.*

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto extract has been used for decades in Europe for mild to moderate prostate enlargement. To achieve an effective potency, it is recommended to take 640 mg of an 45% extract once per day, 320 mg of an 85% extract once per day or 160 mg of an 85% extract twice per day.*

Stinging Nettle

Nettle (Urtica dioica), also known as stinging nettle, is a rich source of beneficial phytonutrients such as chlorophyll, sterols, polyphenols, lignans, and gallic acid. Stinging nettle is a common ingredient in prostate formulas because clinical trials have shown it to influence the frequency of nighttime urination (fewer trips to the bathroom).*

Graminex® Flower Pollen Extract

Graminex Flower Pollen Extract is used by millions of men worldwide. The available evidence suggests that Graminex is well tolerated and modestly improves overall urological symptoms, including nocturia (excessive urinating at night). In one study, sixty patients with outflow obstruction due to BPH were given Graminex pollen extract or placebo for 6 months. There was a statistically significant subjective improvement with pollen extract (69% of the patients) compared with placebo (30%). There was a significant decrease in residual urine in the patients treated with pollen extract.*

Flowens™ Cranberry

Flowens™ is a natural cranberry powder clinically shown to improve lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) typically associated with BPH. In one study, men with LUTS were randomly assigned to consume once daily 250 mg or 500 mg of Flowens or placebo for 6 months. At 6 months, compared to placebo, Flowens showed a significant and dose-dependent reduction in LUTS.*

Lycopene, a carotenoid found in tomatoes, has been associated with long-term prostate health. According to a report in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, carotenoids are assimilated more readily through supplementation than from diet alone. Lycopene has also been shown to reduce oxidative stress and improve the health and function of the endothelial blood vessel linings.*

Researchers measured serum levels of selenium in men with prostate issues and healthy men, and followed them for eight years. Scientists found that men who had higher selenium levels who also reported taking a multivitamin had a 39% lower risk for prostate issues than men with the lowest selenium levels.*
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: 2007; Vol. 85, No. 1, 209-17.

Green Tea

One study showed that men taking green tea catechins for one year reduced their risk of developing prostate issues. They found that EGCG, the compound found in green tea, targeted certain unhealthy prostate cells for death, without damaging healthy controls.*

Vitamin D

Research also shows that supplementing with 4,000 IU of vitamin D helped improve PSA levels in men with stable, slow-growing, non-aggressive prostate cancer.*
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism; 2012, Vol. 97, No. 7, 2315-24.

Coenzyme Q10 and Omega-3s

A research study showed that men consuming omega-3's (EPA and DHA) or CoQ10 showed a significant reduction in PSA levels.*
British Journal of Nutrition; 2013, FirstView Article, 1-8.

Pumpkin Seed Oil

Pumpkin Seed Oil is a nutritional oil derived from a special variety of pumpkins. Pressed from green seeds, the oil provides essential fatty acids as well as vitamins and minerals. Pumpkin seed oil is valued for its naturally-occurring plant sterol (phytosterol) content. It may support a healthy bladder and prostate function.*
While you might not find all these ingredients in a single formula, some of them work on similar pathways to support prostate health and minimize those nighttime trips to the bathroom.*

In the prostate gland, zinc serves as an important enzymatic cofactor. It also helps maintain prostate tissues. It does not help with urine flow, but is important to the overall health of the prostate. Zinc can be found in many multi-vitamin and mineral formulas or you can choose individual zinc formulas.*
