Glutathione may promote younger skin

In the first study of its kind, 60 healthy women took a placebo or 250 mg of reduced or oxidized glutathione per day. Doctors measured skin features over the 12-week study period.

Compared to placebo, women in both glutathione groups had lower melanin index scores—melanin is the brown or black pigment in skin—meaning lighter skin, and fewer dark skin spots from ultraviolet light. The glutathione groups also saw significantly less-prominent wrinkles compared to placebo, and a tendency to greater skin elasticity.

These findings have never been reported before, doctors said, and are interesting because glutathione had anti-aging effects and increased skin elasticity in both sun-exposed and sun-protected skin. As the population ages and lives longer, glutathione may be a safe, affordable way to protect and promote healthy skin.
