Astaxanthin is a unique and powerful red-colored antioxidant

Astaxanthin is a very unique, red carotenoid with powerful antioxidant capabilities.*  In total, astaxanthin has been the subject of over 400 peer-reviewed studies. According to one study (1) astaxanthin is one of the most powerful antioxidants in the world. 

When it comes to singlet oxygen quenching, it is 560 times stronger than green tea catechins, 800 times stronger than CoQ10, 3,000 times stronger than resveratrol and 6,000 times stronger than vitamin C.* 


Astaxanthin quenches free radicals in the inner and outer layer of cell membranes*

Part of this power comes from its unique chemical structure, which causes the molecule to stretch across cellular membranes. This allows astaxanthin to quench free radicals in the inner and outer layer of the cell membrane, unlike many other antioxidants that can only function in one area or the other. This protects our cells – inside and out!*


Why do antioxidants and free radicals matter?

Free radicals are unstable, highly reactive molecules that have unpaired electrons. They can be generated naturally in our bodies by different metabolic activities, enzymatic reactions and exercise. These radicals are usually produced in a scale that the body’s natural antioxidants can handle. In our day-to-day lives, we are also exposed to free radicals by various other sources in the environment around us; for example – pollution, smoking, UV radiation from the sun and the consumption of alcohol. This additional exposure to a toxic environment creates a significant imbalance between the body’s natural antioxidant capacity and its ability to neutralize free radicals. The result is a damaging condition called “oxidative stress”.

One of the primary causes of human aging is oxidative stress caused by free radicals. They have harmful effects on lipids, proteins, DNA and can cause damage to the human body. Put simply, antioxidants are molecules that work against the oxidation of the cells. They are stable enough to offer electrons to free radicals and thus help neutralize them. They provide protection against the damaging effects of free radicals.* 


Astaxanthin may protect the brain and eyes*

Astaxanthin is also one of the few carotenoids that can cross the blood-brain barrier and the blood-retinal barrier, adding a level of protection to the brain and eyes as well. Other antioxidants with this ability are lutein and zeaxanthin, which are often taken to support eye health.*


Astaxanthin comes from algae

Astaxanthin is found in salmon, krill and the algae that they eat. It is actually what gives salmon, krill and even flamingos their red-to-pink color. This is why many krill oil supplements contain astaxanthin, while most fish oils (unless it is salmon oil) will not contain astaxanthin. Among these potential sources, algae have the highest density of astaxanthin.

The astaxanthin-producing Haematococcus pluvialis is a freshwater microalgae. Under favorable conditions, the green cells of Haematococcus pluvialis thrive. When stressed, these algae begin producing and accumulating astaxanthin. Astaxanthin acts like a force field that protects the nuclear DNA and cell content from oxidation and UVA radiation. In this form, the algae can survive for long periods, even under harsh conditions.


AstaReal® uses indoor photobioreactors in the USA to grow ultra-clean, astaxanthin-rich microalgae

AstaReal® was the first company in the world to commercially produce natural astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis. Thanks to their high level of expertise and long-term experience in the production of microalgae, they can offer a high-quality product with high amounts of astaxanthin per kilogram of biomass. The algae is grown in stainless steel photobioreactors in the USA under carefully-controlled, indoor, sterile conditions to enable a more effective, cleaner, and safer process.

Cultivation starts with the “seed” which is provided essential nutrients to give the algae optimal conditions for rapid growth and proliferation (Green Phase). When the culture has reached its optimum density in the Green Phase, the production of astaxanthin is induced (Red Phase). After harvest, the algae is crushed and dried.

Compared to outdoor ponds, this indoor process allows them to use less water by increasing the water’s density of algae as well as reducing evaporation. It also reduces the risk of contamination from issues like birds landing on the water, dust blowing into the water and pollution in the air settling in the water. The end result is an ultra-clean product.

This entire process of cultivation, growing, and harvesting takes place in the city of Moses Lake, Washington. The end result is USA made, non-GMO certified, deep-red powder that contains a high concentration of astaxanthin.


Over 50 human studies have been performed with AstaReal® astaxanthin
