Lean people tend to have more burnable fat than obese people. In this study, both lean and overweight rats got a placebo or oral melatonin in drinking water. Researchers did not know until after the study which group got the placebo or melatonin. After six weeks, melatonin converted less-burnable white fat into more-burnable brown fat in both study groups. Also, melatonin increased fat-burning capacity during exercise. Doctors said melatonin appears to increase the ability of the body to generate heat, which may explain its metabolic benefits, and its anti-diabetic and lipid-lowering properties.
