Here’s a little bit of the science behind this formula. Whey protein is one of the best muscle-building proteins, largely because of its high leucine content. In 25 grams of protein from whey, you get about 3,000 mg of leucine. In 25 grams of protein from casein, you get about 2,300 mg of leucine. And in 25 grams of protein from soy, you get about 1,500 mg of leucine. The lower the leucine levels in a protein, the lower the effect it has on muscle protein synthesis. Researchers speculate this is due to leucine’s impact on mTOR. When you activate the body’s mTOR pathway, muscle protein synthesis is stimulated. It’s thought that the minimum threshold to activate mTOR is around 1,700 to 2,400 mg of leucine for resistance-trained young men. Older men may need more.*
You need all the amino acids to build muscle, not just leucine
Other research shows just straight leucine doesn’t activate muscle-protein synthesis as well as when all the other amino acids are present. In order to duplicate this effect, we’ve combined about 5,000 mg of whey protein with 400 mg of leucine in 5 tablets. The 5,000 mg of whey contains about 400 mg of naturally-occurring leucine. We then doubled the leucine found in this much whey with another 400 mg of leucine. In essence, you’re getting a double dose of leucine compare to what is in the same amount of whey.
