Magnesium may help “skinny fat” people

Individuals with a normal weight who carry extra fat and less lean muscle mass may be less healthy than those who are muscularly fit and fat. The condition is called “skinny fat,” or metabolically-obese-normal-weight (MONW), and raises chances for diabetes and other health problems.

Doctors wanted to test the effects of magnesium on 47 MONW people with low magnesium levels. The group took either 382 mg of liquid magnesium or a placebo per day. After four months, the placebo group improved slightly, but those taking magnesium saw almost a 50 percent improvement in insulin sensitivity, a 12 percent decline in fasting blood sugar levels, a 47 percent drop in triglycerides, and a 2.0 and 3.8 mmHg lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respectively.
