A tropical tree native to Indonesia, nutmeg is also commonly cultivated in the Caribbean. The plant produces a fruit that actually contains the source of two spices and essential oils—mace, the reddish seed covering, and nutmeg, the brown seed itself. Warm, spicy and slightly sweet, nutmeg is used as a dry ground spice in a wide variety of international cuisines.

History of Nutmeg

Nutmeg is no ordinary spice—battles were once fought over control of its trade, and the island of Grenada even features its fruit and prized seed prominently on its national flag, a symbol of the small country's spirited vibrancy. Nutmeg's most valued quality, however, is arguably its intoxicating fragrance, which is simply like no other spicy scent, offering warmth and clarifying comfort, along with an elated "I can take on the world" feeling!
