Magnesium improved insulin sensitivity

Prior studies found magnesium improved insulin sensitivity—the ability of the body to metabolize sugars—in diabetics.

This study measured magnesium effects in non-diabetics with metabolic syndrome. Doctors followed 234 participants with three of five metabolic syndrome symptoms; abdominal obesity, high blood pressure or high fasting blood sugar, high triglycerides or low levels of HDL—the good cholesterol.

After 12 months, only one in four met the recommended daily allowance for magnesium which ranges from 320 mg to 420 mg per day. Compared to those who got the least, those who got the most magnesium were 71 percent less likely to have insulin resistance.
