Garlic plus metformin lowers fasting blood sugar in people with high cholesterol

Those with long-term type 2 diabetes experience vascular complications and recent studies have found a direct link between the inflammatory factor, C-reactive protein, and vascular complications in type 2 diabetes.

In this study, 60 obese people with type 2 diabetes took metformin (oral antidiabetic prescription drug) after meals with or without 250 mg of garlic extract, two to three times per day depending on their glucose profile.

After 12 weeks, average fasting blood sugar levels had declined 16 percent for metformin and 23 percent for those taking metformin plus garlic. HDL, the “good” cholesterol, increased 10 percent in the garlic group compared to 5 percent for metformin alone, and C-reactive protein—the inflammatory factor linked to vascular problems—decreased more for those taking garlic.
