Protein helps speed recovery after workouts

Researchers in a cycling study explained that most endurance athletes focus on increasing carbohydrates, but fail to realize that protein speeds recovery.

Two hours after eating a standardized breakfast, researchers had 15 trained male cyclists take a 60-minute time trial, cycling as fast as they could on a stationary cycle. The cyclists then drank a carbohydrate-protein supplement, or a carbohydrate-only supplement at 10 minutes after exercise and at one and two hours after.

Four hours after exercise, the cyclists ate another standardized meal, and six hours after exercise, repeated the 60-minute time trial. Both groups did not perform as well in the second trial, but measuring the decline, the protein group performed twice as well as the carbohydrate group.
