Early-stage discoveries: B-vitamins speed stroke recovery

Good results in pilot studies lead to larger, human trials. Here is a promising recent finding.

Doctors wanted to test the effect of B-vitamins on recovery from stroke. In the lab, 32 mice with stroke received supplements of folic acid, riboflavin, vitamin B12, and choline bitartrate, or no supplementation.

After four weeks, those in the B-vitamin supplement group had better motor control; where the brain activates the muscles, and lower levels of inflammatory homocysteine in the brain. The B-vitamin group also had higher levels of antioxidant activity in the brain, suggesting greater cognitive flexibility.
