Coconut oil may relieve eczema

Some newborns have a genetic tendency toward allergy, with dermatitis, also known as eczema, an early sign that asthma or hay fever may follow.

In this study, 117 children with mild to moderate eczema applied virgin coconut oil to the skin twice per day, or applied mineral oil as a placebo. After eight weeks, eczema symptoms decreased in severity 38 percent for placebo and 68 percent for coconut oil. The children who used coconut oil also had much more hydrated skin and, while nearly half the kids in the placebo group had not improved, almost half of those in the coconut oil group saw moderate improvement and half saw major improvement with coconut oil.
