Lutein, zeaxanthin, and alpha-tocopherol may protect against cataract
In cataract, the lens of the eye clouds over, reducing vision. Oxidative stress is a factor in cataract, and hydrogen peroxide is the most common oxidant in this condition. Researchers incubated cultured human lens cells with lutein, zeaxanthin, or alpha-tocopherol for 48 hours, then exposed the cells to hydrogen peroxide for one hour. All three nutrients significantly reduced hydrogen peroxide levels, oxidative stress, DNA damage, and improved cell viability.
