Omega-3s reduce coronary heart disease

Doctors in this long-term study tracked the vitamins and supplements in 22,035 men and women, aged 39 to 79, and followed up for 22 years.

Overall, compared to those who did not take any supplements, those who took omega-3 supplements were 26 percent less likely to die from coronary heart disease (CHD). Doctors also measured those whose only supplement was omega-3, and found they were 17 percent less likely to die from CHD compared to those who took no supplements at all. In a final finding, chances of surviving CHD were greater in those who consistently took omega-3, and in those who began taking omega-3 during the study period, but the survival benefit disappeared in those who stopped taking omega-3.
