Potassium improves circulation

Relaxed and flexible blood vessels may slow or prevent cardiovascular disease, and increasing potassium levels may help.

In this study, 35 men and women aged 21 to 44 alternated between high- and low-potassium diets for six days each, while maintaining a calorie-controlled diet. Researchers found during the high-potassium phases, blood flow was much better, and one sign of developing cardiovascular disease significantly decreased.

Doctors said the findings suggest that potassium affects the smooth-muscle lining that runs along blood vessel walls —possibly by increasing nitric oxide, a powerful muscle relaxant—which helps dilate the blood vessels and increase blood flow.
