Omega-3s relieve dry eye

The healthy eye has a thin film that coats, protects, cleans and moistens the eye, and consists of three layers; inner mucus, middle saltwater and outer oil. In dry eye, there are too few tears in the saltwater layer, causing discomfort and blurred vision.

In one study, 36 people with dry eye took 450 mg of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), 300 mg of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), and 1,000 mg of flaxseed oil per day, or a placebo. After 90 days, 70 percent of those in the omega-3 group had no symptoms compared to 7 percent for placebo. Also compared to placebo, the omega-3 group had greater tear flow and volume.
