Zinc reduces the common cold

Researchers in this review analyzed 15 zinc studies that included 1,360 participants of all ages.

People who took zinc syrup, lozenges or tablets within one day of feeling cold symptoms reported less-severe symptoms and shorter illness than placebo.

In two related prevention studies, researchers followed 394 children taking a zinc supplement and found that zinc reduced the number of colds, the number of days absent from school, and the need for prescription antibiotics in those who took zinc for at least five months. Doctors call for more study to find the best dose and form of zinc to take for colds.
