Omega-3s improve artery flexibility

Many studies have shown that increased intake of omega-3s from fish oil or flaxseed oil can decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease and influence vascular function.

In a study involving 25 healthy subjects (12 men and 13 women), diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids has been shown to improve postprandial (after meal) arterial stiffness.

Subjects received a control meal and an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid-rich meal on two occasions in a random order. Arterial stiffness was measured at baseline, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 and 240 minutes after meal consumption. After consumption of the omega-3 fatty acid-rich meal, arterial stiffness was significantly reduced compared to the control meal.

These results suggest that consumption of omega-3 fatty acids may have beneficial effects on arterial stiffness, thereby exerting a cardioprotective effect. They conclude that their results have important implications for the beneficial properties of LC n-3 PUFA (long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids) and cardiovascular risk reduction."
