Expectant moms and gestational diabetes
Hormones increase during pregnancy and can keep expectant moms from properly metabolizing carbohydrates, leading to gestational diabetes. In this study, 70 women with gestational diabetes who were deficient in magnesium took 150 mg of magnesium (from magnesium oxide) per day, or a placebo.

After six weeks, fasting blood sugar, insulin resistance, triglycerides, and the inflammatory factor high-sensitivity C-reactive protein all increased for placebo while decreasing significantly for moms who took magnesium. Also, newborns of moms who took magnesium were 70 percent less likely to develop infant jaundice, a condition caused by elevated bilirubin in the immature liver, and common in gestational diabetes.
