B vitamins reduce homocysteine

High levels of homocysteine—an abnormal inflammatory protein—damage blood vessels and can lead to heart disease. In one study, researchers gave 300 people either 2 mcg or 10 mcg of vitamin B12 with or without 200 mcg of folic acid per day, folic acid alone, or a placebo. After 12 months, homocysteine was much lower in both vitamin B12 groups and in the folic acid group.
