Buyer's Guide: The best heart support products

If you have a family history of heart problems, smoke, are overweight, or have high cholesterol levels, then the following is a must-read.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) & Ubiquinol

Research on this vitamin / enzyme-like substance has focused mainly on those with severe heart problems. As you might suspect, the highest concentrations of CoQ10 are found in the heart. If you are taking any of the statin drugs, you should also be taking CoQ10 because statin drugs interfere with natural CoQ10 production.

Ubiquinol CoQ10 is the active form of CoQ10 directly used by the body. Regular CoQ10 (Ubiquinone) must undergo a multi-step conversion process in the body to become Ubiquinol. Ubiquinol offers increased bioavailability for those who for various reasons have difficulty converting regular CoQ10 to its active form.

Typical dose levels for the average person are 30-120 mg daily. These levels are probably adequate as a preventative, with higher doses (up to 300 mg) better for those with current problems.* In general, the more severe your problem, the greater the benefit.

We recommend Lindberg CoQ10 100 mg or Lindberg CoQ10 Ubiquinol 100 mg.

The good cholesterol (HDL) you need is manufactured partly from the linoleic acid, choline and inositol found in this natural emulsifier. Everyone should make a habit of throwing one or two tablespoons of lecithin granules in a protein shake or smoothie every day.

Fish Oil (Omega-3)

The essential fatty acids in fish oil, known as omega-3s (mainly EPA and DHA), are important for a healthy heart, and also play a critical role in the health of your skin, joints, cell membrane structure, nervous system and brain development.* Adding omega-3s to your diet also helps counteract the excess saturated fat and omega-6 oils found in meats and most vegetable oils.

When researchers measured the level of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA within red blood cells, they found that they had discovered one of the most significant predictors of heart health called the omega-3 index. This index was a better predictor of coronary artery health than other established markers such as total, LDL, or HDL cholesterol; C-reactive protein; and homocysteine. A low omega-3 index score resulted in the least protection and the greatest score resulted in the most protection.

A regular strength fish oil softgel contains about 300 mg of EPA and DHA. A concentrated fish oil softgel typically contains 500 to 600 mg of EPA and DHA. Most experts recommend a daily dosage of 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA combined. Higher doses may be required for therapeutic applications.

Try Lindberg Fish Oil Liquid or Fitness Labs Double Strength Fish Oil.

Plant Sterols

Beta sitosterol is a type of phytosterol found in plants such as soybeans and peanuts. It’s included in many prostate health supplements because of the studies indicating its usefulness in supporting normal urinary flow in men.*

Preliminary scientific evidence suggests that plant phytosterols may help to support cholesterol wellness when consumed as part of a low cholesterol dietary program. The three main phytosterols in phytosterol complex are beta-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol. They are natural, safe, and derived entirely from plant sources.*
