Bilberry, Pycnogenol and fish oil protect eyesight

Bilberry, Pycnogenol and omega-3 fish oil help protect eyesight in two recent studies.

In the first study to show that nutrients normalized eye pressure, 38 people with abnormally high pressure in the eye took 80 mg of bilberry extract and 40 mg of Pycnogenol twice per day or a placebo for six months. After three months, eye pressure was 13 percent lower in the bilberry-Pycnogenol group compared to placebo and had almost returned to normal healthy levels. The eye pressure disorder, called “intraocular hypertension,” may eventually damage vision (glaucoma).

In an omega-3 review, researchers analyzed nine studies that included nearly 89,000 people, about 3,200 of whom had age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Those who consumed high levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were 30 percent less likely to develop the early form of AMD. Those who consumed high levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA were 38 percent less likely to develop the advanced form of AMD. Those who ate fish at least twice per week were 24 percent less likely to develop early AMD and 33 percent less likely to develop advanced AMD.
