Green tea extract lowered cholesterol

Doctors were interested in knowing the effects of green tea extract on lipids in menopause.

In this study, 936 healthy menopausal women took a placebo, or 1,316 mg of green tea extract per day containing 843 mg of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a powerful polyphenol antioxidant abundant in green tea. After 12 months, total cholesterol had decreased by 2.1 percent for women taking green tea extract compared to an increase of 0.7 percent for placebo. LDL, the “bad” cholesterol, declined by 4.1 percent for green tea while increasing 0.9 percent for placebo.

In part of the green tea group: obese women, and those who started the study with low triglyceride levels—below 150 mg per deciliter of blood— triglycerides increased by 3.6 percent. Doctors said green tea extract may help limit how much cholesterol the body absorbs.
