Whey lowers blood pressure

Some of the proteins in whey consist of specific peptides (small protein fragments) that have been shown to exert positive effects on factors that lower blood pressure. Australian researchers, therefore, decided to test the effects of whey protein on blood pressure and vascular function in obese men and women.

Subjects randomized to receive 27g of hydrolyzed whey protein isolate twice per day for 12 weeks showed a 4% reduction in systolic blood pressure and a 3% reduction in diastolic blood pressure. Supplementation with whey protein isolate also resulted in a 14% improvement in vascular function as assessed by a pulse wave analysis technique.

These results indicate that whey protein contains peptides that have a positive effect on blood pressure and vascular function when consumed as part of a typical diet in overweight individuals.
