Acetyl-L-carnitine helps mental function; L-carnitine helps increase energy, mental alertness and more

In a study from the University of Catania, in Catania, Italy at the Department of Senescence, doctors recruited 96 men and women at least 70 years old who were diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The main symptom of CFS is chronic mental and physical fatigue that does not go away with rest. Study authors noted that there are few treatments for people with CFS and wanted to see if acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) could help.

At the end of the study, the ALC group reported 27% less muscle pain compared to 3% less for placebo. The ALC group had 51% less prolonged fatigue after exercise, while the placebo group had 4% more. Those who took ALC reported 28% fewer sleep disorders compared to 4% less for placebo and the ALC group also had significantly less mental fatigue and significantly better mental function than the placebo group.

Centenarians—those 100 years of age or more—lost body fat, gained muscle and had increased physical energy and mental ability after taking the amino acid L-carnitine in a study from the Department of Senescence (old age), University of Catania in Catania, Italy.

Researchers recruited 66 centenarians who complained of being tired even after slight physical activity. Half the participants took 2 grams of L-carnitine per day, while the other half took a placebo. At the end of the study, those who had taken L-carnitine had lost nearly four pounds of body fat compared to 1.3 pounds for the placebo group. The L-carnitine group had gained 8.4 pounds of muscle mass, while the placebo group gained 1.8 pounds. Those in the L-carnitine group had significantly less physical fatigue and could walk 13 feet farther in a six-minute walking test compared to placebo. The L-carnitine group also had significantly more mental energy and scored higher on mental tests than did the placebo group. There were no side effects.
