Early-Stage Discoveries: Curcumin reduced symptoms in heart failure

In heart failure, the heart does not pump sufficient blood to the body, reducing strength. Muscles require antioxidant enzymes to function properly, and curcumin activates a protein—Nrf2— that regulates these enzymes.

In the lab, mice with heart failure that got curcumin for 12 weeks had increased expression of Nrf2, higher levels of antioxidant enzymes, and increased exercise capacity. Doctors said activating Nrf2 in skeletal muscle may be a novel therapy to improve quality of life in heart failure.
