Omega-3s and antioxidants help women maintain healthy hair
Healthy hair needs a reliable supply of hair-matrix cells, which it receives from the papilla at the base of the hair follicle. Inflammation and impaired circulation can starve the hair follicle of this nutrient-rich blood supply, leading to hair loss. In this study, 120 healthy women of normal to overweight had typical stage-1 hair loss, where they were losing up to 100 strands of hair per day. The women took a placebo or a combination of 460 mg of omega-3 fish oil, 460 mg of black currant seed oil, 7.5 IU of vitamin E, 30 mg of vitamin C, and 1 mg of lycopene per day. After six months, while the placebo group continued to lose hair without improving, women who took the antioxidants had more hair follicles in the growth cycle and fewer in the resting cycle, and about nine in 10 saw less hair loss, greater hair diameter, and increased hair density.
