Lignans help reduce breast cancer risk

Doctors believe that lignans—plant-based antioxidants that block the action of estrogen in the body—may protect against breast cancer.

To find out, researchers analyzed the diets of women who had participated in 21 different studies and found that postmenopausal women who consumed the most lignans were 14 percent less likely to develop breast cancer compared to those who got the least.

Foods that contain lignans include flax and sesame seeds, whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
