What causes age spots?

These flat brown spots, also known as liver spots, in themselves are harmless but can be a sign of other underlying problems. Age spots are the result of free radical damage in skin cells.

According to Roger J. Williams, Ph.D., the author of Nutrition Against Disease, these deposits are not just on the surface skin, but may also be found in the brain, heart, adrenal gland, and other parts of the body. According to Dr. Williams, age spots are directly linked to a lack of vitamin E and other antioxidants. It's especially important to supplement with antioxidants before these age spots begin to appear on your skin, but antioxidants are important for the prevention of new age spots appearing.
