Tryptophan
L-tryptophan may help improve mood and sleep patterns*
L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid that is not synthesized by the body and must be obtained in the diet. L-tryptophan is eventually converted to serotonin—a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood, sleep and appetite. Low serotonin levels in the brain are associated with poor mental health and sleep disturbances. Supplementing with L-tryptophan may help raise serotonin levels, promoting better mood, relaxation and rest.*
L-tryptophan is also broken down into melatonin, a hormone that regulates the body's sleeping cycle, and the B-vitamin niacin, which helps maintain healthy function of the nervous system, digestive system and skin.
L-tryptophan also plays a part in the production of compounds called kynurenines, which have been found to suppress immune response, an effect that may benefit those with overactive immune function.*
