Taurine is a non-essential sulfur-containing amino acid. It is one of the most abundant free amino acids in the body, second only to glutamine in the muscle amino acid pool. It is found in many tissues, including the heart skeletal muscles, nervous system and brain.
In the body, taurine is a water soluble antioxidant that plays an important role in many physiological functions including glucose uptake, metabolism, detoxification and cell membrane stabilization.*
Taurine is found mainly in fish and meat. Other sources include brewer's yeast, eggs and dairy products.
