Shake Additions - Optional

by Judy Lindberg McFarland, Author, Nutritionist

Optional shake additions include those for joint health, L-carnitine for cardiovascular health and dieting, MSM for joint, skin, hair and nails, and a multi-vitamin powder. All of these are available in pill form, yet to minimize the number of pill you swallow, adding them to a shake is convenient and more economical. Take into consideration that none of these ingredients taste very good except for L-carnitine.

For joint health, our most comprehensive formula is ArthRenew. It has glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, vitamin C, collagen and a number of herbs. If you toss this powder in your shake, you'll save the equivalent of swallowing 7 capsules.

MSM is a natural form of sulfur. Unless you eat eggs often, you may not be getting all the sulfur you need. MSM is good for joint health, but is also great for lustrous hair, smooth skin and strong nails. Add 1-4 grams to your shake. It has a rather bitter taste, so a pill form is always an optional way to get MSM into your diet. If you take the ArthRenew product, it already includes 1 gram of MSM.

L-carnitine is a free-form amino acid (protein) that has been shown to support the heart and cardiovascular system. Carnitine also helps athletes optimize their performance, allows fat to burn more easily, aids in rejuvenating our aging brains and even promotes healthy sperm function. Add 1-2 tablespoons (1-2 grams) to your shake. Each 16 fluid ounce size container contains 31 servings.

A multi-vitamin and mineral formula should be taken by everyone. Instead of swallowing pills, you can add a multi-vitamin powder to your protein shake. I recommend the Varsity Pack 2 powder, a formula that is the equivalent of swallowing 8 pills. It is a core ingredient to my Nutrition Plan.
