L-carnitine is vital for heart health, especially blood vessel health, heart rhythm and those with cholesterol and triglyceride issues. For athletes, L-carnitine helps them optimize their performance. L-carnitine also allows fat to burn more easily. It works by carrying fat to the mitochondial inner membrane where energy is produced. Without L-carnitine, the normal burning of fat cannot take place. Effective doses of L-carnitine range from about 1 gram (1,000 mg) per day (equal to 1 Tbsp) on up to 4 grams per day for people with more severe heart problems or those undergoing intense exercise.
