Good nutrition helps support cardiovascular health

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Although some people are born with heart defects, poor lifestyle habits such as smoking, poor diet, and lack of exercise can also cause heart trouble. As an alternative to prescription medications, people are increasingly turning to nutritional supplements to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA that are found in fatty fish, promote cardiovascular health. Studies have shown fish oil to improve heart rhythm, prevent clot formation and plaque buildup in arteries, lower blood pressure, and increase plasma levels of “good” HDL cholesterol.

Co-enzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is a vitamin-like nutrient naturally produced in the body and is recognized as a key element to energy production and antioxidant protection. People with congestive heart failure have been found to have low levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy-rich chemical compound that provides virtually all the energy needed by your body.  CoQ10 is a key factor in the production of ATP. CoQ10 supports healthy circulation.

Several heart health and cholesterol formulas contain phytosterols that support cardiovascular health. These plant sterol esters help support healthy cholesterol levels when combined with proper diet and exercise.

Some cholesterol formulas also contain ingredients such as garlic, which can help maintain healthy triglycerides and cholesterol levels, supporting heart health.

Other products supporting heart health include vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin B-6, folic acid, niacin, lecithin, L-carnitine, magnesium, and herbs like hawthorn berry.*
