Q. What does it mean when the label says "Elemental Calcium"?
A. Elemental Calcium is a term used for pure calcium. However, pure calcium is not available in nature. When purchasing calcium supplements, be sure to look for the elemental calcium content, not the total content.
Q. Why is this so important?
A. It is important that your supplement be bio-available which means it can be absorbed and used by your body. Example: A tablet that contains 1250mg of calcium carbonate actually contains 500mg of elemental calcium, plus 750mg of "carbonate." After you take the product, these are separated with the carbonate being digested and the elemental calcium portion entering the blood stream to be used in biochemical functions such as building strong bones.*
An honest label clearly represents the actual amount of elemental calcium the product will provide. Some products, although technically not mislabeled, appears to offer much more calcium than is actually provided and is very often misunderstood by consumers.
