L-carnitine is vital for heart health, especially blood vessel health and heart rhythm, and for those with elevated cholesterol and triglycerides.

For athletes, L-carnitine helps optimize performance. L-carnitine also allows fat to burn more easily. It works by carrying fat to the mitochondria where energy is produced. Without L-carnitine, normal fat burning cannot take place.

Effective doses of L-carnitine range from about 1 gram (1,000 mg) per day (equal to 1 Tbsp) up to 4 grams per day for people with more severe heart problems or those who exercise heavily.
