Antioxidant nutrients lower oxidative stress, improve vascular health

Those with elevated lipid levels also have increased oxidative stress, which can damage cell DNA.
In one study, ten men with normal lipid levels and ten with elevated lipid levels took 1,560 mg of EPA plus 1,140 mg of DHA per day, both omega-3 fish oils.
After 12 weeks, both groups showed an increase in antioxidative enzymes, and a decrease in pro-oxidative enzymes, which doctors measured at the cellular level. The benefits were greatest in the group with elevated lipid levels.
Doctors said the findings make sense because those with elevated lipid levels also have higher oxidative stress levels and that if EPA and DHA are going to have an anti-oxidative effect, it would be greater in those with the higher oxidative stress load.
