In one study, mice with arthritis ate a standard diet alone, with krill oil, or with fish oil. Compared to the standard diet alone or fish oil diet, those taking krill oil had better joint function, less foot swelling and fewer inflammatory cells within joints.
Joint health scores continued to improve only in the krill oil group. Doctors think part of the beneficial effect may be because the majority of omega-3s in krill oil are in the form of phospholipids, which are easily absorbable.
