Over an eight month period, 100 osteoarthritis patients took the equivalent of 200 mg a day of curcumin. Measured on the WOMAC score and treadmill performance test, it produced statistically significant improvements in pain relief, stiffness and physical function as compared to the control group.
Regular curcumin is not well absorbed by the body, requiring higher doses to achieve effectiveness. A patented phytosome complex form of curcumin (Meriva®) was used in the study and produced effective results at a much lower daily dosage due to its enhanced absorption over standard curcumin.
For those suffering with mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis, curcumin may offer an alternative for those who wish to phase out their use of NSAIDs (aspirin-type products).
