Joe at Lindberg NutritionJoe dropped by our grand opening of our retail store, signed autographs and answered questions about sports nutrition. Here are some highlights about what he had to say.

Nutrition Express: What are the most effective supplements you take?

Joe: First, I start with a good multi. I take Universal's Animal Pak and add their Natural Sterol Complex. Next on my list is a protein powder or meal replacement. I take this 4 times a day between the 3 to 4 meals I eat. I use Universal's Whey Pro twice a day and a soy protein and an egg protein each once a day.

If I skip a meal, then I'll take one of the powders I mentioned earlier and add 2 scoops of Universal's Hard Fast (high carb) essentially making my own meal replacement.

NE: How about before workouts?

Joe: I usually take a thermogenic formula for extra strength and energy about an hour to half hour before workouts. I like Universal's Ripped Fast (capsules). I train 3 out of six days, 2 on 1 off, then 1 on 2 off.

NE: What do you take after workouts?

Former Mr. America & Mr. Universe Joe DeAngelis Joe: I drink Universal LAVA right after a workout, and I mean right after it. I put the dry powder in a shaker cup and take it to the gym. Then right after the workout, I'll go fill it up with water at the drinking fountain, shake it up and drink it. It has equal amounts of high glycemic carbs and whey protein plus 5.5g of creatine, 2.5g of glutamine and 1.2g of taurine. This is a critical time to get nutrients into your system and high glycemic carbs help transport them. I think everyone should have 4 or 5 shaker cups filled with protein powder at the office or in their car so they never get caught without protein, that is if you're serious about building muscle. That's what I do.

NE: Is there anything else you take?

Joe: If I eat a meal with say, tuna for the protein, I'll take amino acids (tablets or capsules) to raise the protein quality of the meal. I also take BCAAs (branched chain amino acids) which are anti-catabolic after workouts. Plus I take extra vitamin C and E.

NE:Joe, how can the average guy afford all that unless he's got a supplement contract with Universal like you?

Joe: With your low prices, they're a lot more affordable than you think. And the protein powders are essentially food so instead of spending it at the supermarket, you're allocating it to protein supplements. But you're right, not everyone can afford my regimen. I take more supplements than the average guy because I'm 270 pounds and am a professional bodybuilder. To build muscle, everyone should at least take a multi, take a protein powder (1 gram per pound of bodyweight) and consume a high carb after workout shake with creatine. Then add the extra supplements you can afford.
