After competing in several local and regional area bodybuilding shows for the past five years, I decided to try my hand at the state level this year. So last year I began training for the North Carolina State Masters Bodybuilding Competition. All of my hard work and training paid off as I placed first overall in the Masters State Show in the heavyweight division over age 40.
Everywhere I go, the malls, at work, in the gym, everyone wants to know what supplements I use and where I get them. The supplements that I use when preparing for competition are MuscleTech's Cell Tech (creatine transport), Fitness Labs' L-Glutamine, Optimum Nutrition's Pro Complex (high protein powder - whey and egg) and Cytodyne Technology's Xenadrine (diet product).
Twelve weeks before my competition I make some changes in my work out regimen. I go light on the weight and high on the reps. This helps with muscle definition. About 10 weeks out I stay away from fast foods and start eating more clean. Things such as steamed or baked chicken breasts, steamed vegetables, tuna, egg whites and oatmeal. I drink lots of water. A week out from competition I start carb depleting but I keep my water intake up. Three days out I start carb loading and water depleting. The carb loading will inflate your muscles while the water depleting will tighten the skin around the muscles. This actually makes you look bigger than you really are. The day of the show I sip water. This helps to keep me from cramping. I also start taking potassium pills about 4 days before the show. At show time I just try to stay focused and positive. I really enjoy competing and I will keep doing it as long as it is fun for me and I look good enough to do it. That might be for a long time.
My thanks to Nutrition Express for having all the supplements I need at such a low price.
