High-protein diets help keep weight off in the long-term

High-protein diets can help maintain long-term weight loss, a new study reveals. Australian researchers studied 79 middle-aged women to determine the effectiveness of a high-protein diet on the maintenance of long-term weight loss. The women completed an intensive 12-week weight loss program and 52 weeks of follow-up to compare the effects of a high-protein diet and a high-carbohydrate diet. Women eating the most protein (88 grams per day) lost 14 pounds compared to 7 pounds in the women eating the least amount of protein. The weight loss translated into further health benefits for the women—heart disease risk factors such as blood fats, blood sugar and insulin improved with weight loss.
