High-protein, Low-carb Diets: Best for Maintaining Muscle While Losing Fat

Researchers at the University of Florida combined the results of over 80 studies on dieting in a process called meta-regression. When comparing a low-carb diet, to a high-carb or mixed diet containing the same amount of calories for a duration of at least 12 weeks, they found the low-carb diets resulted in greater losses in weight (14 pounds), fat mass (12.3 pounds) and bodyfat percentage (3.6 percent). Their findings confirmed the efficacy of low-carb, high-protein diets in losing fat and preserving muscle mass for diets lasting between 12 and 52 weeks.
