In one double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, researchers wanted to evaluate the effect of PS on memory. They recruited 149 subjects aged 50 to 79 years with age-associated memory impairment (AAMI), a risk factor for dementia. After taking 300 mg per day for 12 weeks, the PS group improved memory performance as much as 30% over placebo. Memory tests included name recall, telephone number recall, facial recognition and object placement (keys and glasses).
One subgroup experienced more benefit from PS — those who had the worst scores in the beginning and who were slightly older than the average.

Helps athletes blunt cortisol*
The stress hormone cortisol is produced during strenuous physical exercise and can break down muscle tissue. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, nine cyclists were given either 400 mg or 800 mg of PS per day for 10 days.
After the 10 days, they came to the lab where they rode a bicycle ergometer for 20 minutes to exhaustion. Analysis of blood samples taken during exercise showed that 800 mg of PS blunted the stress hormone cortisol 30% more than placebo.

In a preliminary open study on children with attention deficit, hyperactivity and learning problems, 27 children aged 3 to 19 were given 200 or 300 mg per day of PS, depending on body size, for up to four months.
