ZMA, a zinc-magnesium supplement (30 mg zinc monomethionine aspartate, 450 mg magnesium aspartate, and 10.5 mg vitamin B-6), has been found to increase muscle strength in NCAA football players, according to a study conducted by Lorrie Brilla, Ph.D., at Western Washington University. Brilla reported that subjects who took ZMA nightly for an eight-week spring training program had 2.5 times greater muscle strength gains than a placebo group. Strength of those in the ZMA group increased by 11.6%, compared to 4.6% in the placebo group. There has never been a study reporting adverse health affects at these moderate dosages. These results demonstrate the efficacy of a special Zn-Mg preparation on increased muscle strength in competitive athletes.
